These images and videos are from an unreleased project that I had the pleasure of being a Principle Technical Artist for. They represent a work in progress for generating material overlay effects to represent various gameplay states. Characters in this game could be affected by different status effects and it was important for the design that these be visually represented.
It was possible that in the future more effects might be added so to avoid over-complexity within the base character materials I decided to implement these effects using a material overlay. This is a translucent layer over the top of the base character mesh that can utilize a unique material ID and be adjusted at runtime. This was an early attempt at capturing these effects and at a later date it was expected that vfx and animation would be additional layers for messaging this.
